Our families rode out the trials and tribulations of oppies, 420s and medical school applications. I especially remember a big trip to Cork for the Irish Nationals (oppies), and the 420 Worlds in San Remo. Alastair was terrific company, measured and wise but he had hidden depths of humour, empathy and capacity for adventure. It was a great privilege to know such a great man.  I’m sorry that i won’t be there to see him off, but i know he would urge me to raise my oar (i will be rowing at Henley) to him.
